Observational Learning

Observational learning — also called social learning or modelling — is the acquisition of new behaviours, attitudes, or knowledge through watching others, without the observer being directly reinforced. It extends classical and operant conditioning by showing that learning can occur vicariously: observing what happens to a model is sufficient to produce learning, even when the observer never performs the behaviour and receives no direct reward or punishment.

Albert Bandura and his colleagues established observational learning as a distinct psychological mechanism through their Bobo Doll studies beginning in 1961. Children who watched an adult model behave aggressively toward an inflatable doll subsequently reproduced that aggressive behaviour — including novel verbal and physical acts not directly modelled — when given the opportunity. Crucially, children who saw the model punished were initially less likely to imitate, while those who saw the model rewarded imitated more; but when offered incentives, all children showed they had retained the modelled behaviours.
