Understanding motor development in middle childhood
Middle childhood (6–11 years) is characterised less by the emergence of entirely new motor skills and more by their progressive refinement, automatisation, and integration into complex, context-sensitive movement sequences. The fundamental movement skills established in early childhood — throwing, catching, balancing, running — become increasingly accurate, powerful, and adaptable. Children begin to combine these skills fluently in the context of organised games and sports, and processing speed and reaction time improve markedly across this period.

1912–1965Fitts's law describes the speed-accuracy trade-off in aimed movements; Fitts and Posner's three-stage model of motor learning (cognitive, associative, autonomous) remains the canonical framework for understanding skill automatisation.
Sheila Henderson
1940–Co-developer of the Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC), the most widely used clinical tool for identifying DCD. Her research clarified the prevalence, heterogeneity, and educational impact of DCD in middle childhood.
Key concepts
Automatisation of motor skills
The process by which repeated practice shifts a motor skill from controlled (effortful, attention-demanding) to automatic (fluent, attention-free) processing. Follows Fitts and Posner's three-stage model: cognitive (understanding the task) → associative (reducing errors through practice) → autonomous (automatic, minimal conscious attention required). Automatisation is domain-specific — writing becoming automatic does not generalise to piano.
Reaction time development
The interval from stimulus onset to response initiation improves approximately linearly between ages 6 and 14. Reflects ongoing myelination of corticospinal tracts, improvements in selective attention, and reductions in motor preparation time. Sports and video game training can enhance reaction time within specific tasks; transfer to other tasks is limited.
Balance maturation
Static balance (standing on one foot, eyes open) reaches near-adult levels by around age 7–8; eyes-closed balance and dynamic balance tasks mature more gradually through age 10–12. Reflects maturation of the vestibular-cerebellar system, proprioceptive calibration, and central integration of multi-sensory balance information.
Handwriting development
A complex visuomotor skill that is a major educational focus in middle childhood. Speed, letter consistency, and fluency all improve markedly between ages 6 and 11. Optimal pencil grip (dynamic tripod), appropriate seated posture, and adequate visual-motor integration are prerequisites. Handwriting difficulties — often associated with DCD or attentional difficulties — have knock-on effects for academic output.
Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD)
A neurodevelopmental condition affecting 5–6% of school-age children, characterised by marked difficulty acquiring and performing coordinated motor skills that significantly impacts activities of daily living and academic productivity (particularly handwriting and physical education). Cannot be explained by intellectual disability or neurological injury. Often co-occurs with ADHD, dyslexia, and DLD. Evidence-based intervention is task-oriented (practising specific skills) rather than process-oriented.
