Understanding cognitive development in late adulthood
Late adulthood (65 and beyond) is the period in which cognitive ageing becomes most apparent, most variable, and — in the light of recent research — most surprising. The stereotype of universal and progressive decline has been substantially revised: many cognitive abilities are well-preserved into advanced age, individual differences in cognitive trajectory are enormous, and a significant minority of people in their 80s and even 90s show cognitive performance comparable to people decades younger.

Paul Baltes
1939–2006Developed the lifespan developmental framework, the SOC model of successful ageing, and the Berlin Wisdom Paradigm. Baltes' characterisation of late adulthood as involving both loss (in processing mechanics) and potential gain (in pragmatic wisdom) provided an alternative to deficit-only models of cognitive ageing.
Timothy Salthouse
b. 1947Developed the processing speed theory of cognitive ageing, proposing that the near-universal decline in processing speed is the proximal cause of most age-related declines in memory, reasoning, and executive function — because slowing limits the amount of information that can be held and processed within the time window of a cognitive operation.
Laura Carstensen
b. 1953Developed Socioemotional Selectivity Theory, which predicts and explains the positivity effect, the narrowing of social networks with age, and the prioritisation of emotionally meaningful goals as time horizons shorten. Her work reframes the social and emotional changes of late adulthood as adaptive rather than deficit-driven.
Key concepts
Normal Cognitive Ageing
Age-related cognitive changes that occur in the absence of disease. Characteristic profile: declining processing speed (the most robust and earliest change), episodic memory (especially new learning), and executive function; with relative preservation of semantic memory, procedural memory, implicit memory, and crystallised intelligence. Normal ageing is distinguished from pathological ageing (dementia) by the magnitude and pattern of decline and by the degree of functional impairment.
Episodic Memory Decline
The age-related reduction in the capacity to encode, consolidate, and retrieve specific autobiographical events. Driven by reduced processing speed, attention, and prefrontal executive control — all of which support the organised encoding and strategic retrieval of episodic content. Older adults can often recognise previously seen items normally, but free recall is substantially impaired. The hippocampus, which supports episodic binding, undergoes volume loss with normal ageing.
Berlin Wisdom Paradigm
Paul Baltes and Ursula Staudinger's definition of wisdom as expertise in the fundamental pragmatics of life — knowledge and judgement about the conditions, conduct, and meaning of life. Operationalised through five criteria: factual and procedural knowledge about life, lifespan contextualisation, value relativism, and the recognition and management of uncertainty. Wisdom is rare at any age but does not decline in late adulthood and is slightly more prevalent among older adults with relevant life experience.
Cognitive Reserve
The accumulated neural efficiency and network flexibility built across a lifetime of cognitive activity — education, occupational complexity, bilingualism, social engagement, leisure activities. In late adulthood, cognitive reserve determines the threshold at which neurological change (atrophy, amyloid accumulation, white matter lesions) becomes clinically apparent as cognitive impairment. High-reserve individuals sustain apparent normal performance in the face of greater pathology, but once the reserve is exhausted, decline may be more rapid.
Successful Cognitive Ageing
Maintenance of cognitive function into late adulthood at a level substantially above age-group average. Predictors include high cognitive reserve (education, occupational complexity, bilingualism), physical fitness, social engagement, absence of cardiovascular disease, and continued cognitive activity. Superagers — older adults whose memory performance equals that of people decades younger — have been shown to have distinct structural and functional brain characteristics, including greater cortical thickness in regions typically vulnerable to age-related decline.
Positivity Effect
The tendency of older adults to attend to, process, and remember positive information more than negative information — in contrast to younger adults, who show no such bias or even a negativity bias. Described by Laura Carstensen as a consequence of socioemotional selectivity: as time horizons shorten, emotional regulation becomes the primary cognitive goal, and attention is directed toward emotionally rewarding, positive content. The positivity effect is reduced or eliminated when attention is required by task demands.
