What is cognitive development?
Cognitive development traces how children's thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving capacities change across childhood and adolescence. Two theoretical traditions — Piaget's constructivism and Vygotsky's sociocultural theory — have dominated the field, and while they differ in important ways, together they offer a rich account of how children come to understand the world.

Piaget's four stages of development.
Piaget described cognitive development as progressing through four invariant, universal stages. Each is characterised by a qualitatively different logic — not just 'more' knowledge, but a different kind of thinking.
Sensorimotor Stage
The infant learns through sensory experience and motor action. Key achievement: object permanence — understanding that objects continue to exist when out of sight, fully developed by around 8–12 months.
Preoperational Stage
Language and symbolic thought emerge, but reasoning remains intuitive and egocentric. The child cannot yet perform logical operations and fails conservation tasks — judging that a tall, thin glass holds more water than a short, wide one after watching the same water poured between them.
Concrete Operational Stage
Logical reasoning about concrete objects and events develops. The child masters conservation, seriation, and classification. Thinking remains tied to the concrete — abstract hypothetical reasoning is not yet possible.
Formal Operational Stage
Abstract reasoning, hypothetical thinking, and systematic problem-solving emerge. The adolescent can reason about possibilities rather than just actualities. Not all adults reach or consistently apply formal operational thinking.

Jean Piaget
1896–1980Swiss developmental psychologist who constructed the most comprehensive account of childhood cognitive development. His four-stage theory and core mechanisms of schema, assimilation, accommodation, and equilibration remain central reference points in developmental psychology.
Lev Vygotsky
1896–1934Soviet psychologist who proposed that cognitive development is fundamentally socially mediated. Despite dying at 37, Vygotsky produced a prolific body of work around the zone of proximal development, language as the primary tool of thought, and the role of culture in shaping cognition.
Renée Baillargeon
1954–presentAmerican developmental psychologist who used violation-of-expectation paradigms to show that infants possess object permanence far earlier than Piaget's stage theory predicts, fundamentally challenging the sensorimotor account.
Key concepts
Schema (Piaget)↗
A mental framework or cognitive structure that organises and interprets information. Schemas begin as simple sensorimotor patterns (sucking, grasping) and develop into increasingly abstract mental representations. All cognitive development, for Piaget, involves schemas being built, refined, and reorganised.
Assimilation (Piaget)
The process of interpreting new experiences through existing schemas — fitting the world into what you already know. A child who calls all four-legged animals 'dog' is assimilating new animals into their existing dog schema.
Accommodation (Piaget)
The process of modifying or creating new schemas when existing ones cannot adequately assimilate new information. The child who encounters a horse and revises their schema to distinguish horses from dogs is accommodating.
Equilibration (Piaget)
Piaget's proposed mechanism driving cognitive development. When assimilation and accommodation are in balance, the child is in cognitive equilibrium. Encountering information that doesn't fit existing schemas creates disequilibrium — a motivating state that prompts accommodation and advances development.
Object permanence (Piaget)
The understanding that objects continue to exist even when not visible, audible, or otherwise perceptible. According to Piaget, this emerges fully during the sensorimotor stage (8–12 months). Research by Baillargeon suggests rudimentary object permanence may be present much earlier.
Conservation (Piaget)
The understanding that quantity, number, mass, or volume remains the same despite changes in form or arrangement. Piaget's classic task: children in the preoperational stage judge that a tall, thin glass holds more water than a short, wide glass after watching the same water poured from one to the other.
Zone of Proximal Development — ZPD (Vygotsky)↗
Vygotsky's concept describing the distance between what a learner can achieve independently and what they can achieve with the guidance of a more knowledgeable other. The ZPD is the ideal target for instruction — challenging enough to require support, achievable enough to succeed with it.
Scaffolding (Vygotsky)
Temporary, adjustable support provided by a more knowledgeable other that allows a learner to perform a task within their ZPD. As competence develops, support is progressively withdrawn. The term was introduced by Wood, Bruner, and Ross (1976), inspired by Vygotsky's theory.
More Knowledgeable Other — MKO (Vygotsky)
Vygotsky's term for anyone with a higher level of understanding than the learner — a parent, teacher, peer, or even a book. The MKO provides the social mediation that Vygotsky placed at the heart of cognitive development.
Egocentrism (Piaget)
The preoperational child's inability to take another person's perspective — to understand that others may see, know, or feel things differently from themselves. Illustrated by Piaget's three mountains task, in which children typically assume another person sees the same view of a model as they do. Not to be confused with selfishness; it is a cognitive limitation, not a moral one.
Centration (Piaget)
The preoperational child's tendency to focus on only one feature of a problem at a time, neglecting other relevant dimensions. Central to failures on conservation tasks: the child centres on the height of a glass and ignores its width, leading to the erroneous conclusion that a taller glass contains more liquid.
Private speech (Vygotsky)
The self-directed talk children produce while working on tasks — talking themselves through a problem aloud. Piaget interpreted this as evidence of cognitive immaturity (egocentric speech). Vygotsky's interpretation was opposite: private speech is a transitional cognitive tool being internalised. Research by Berk (1986) supports Vygotsky — private speech peaks on difficult tasks and decreases as competence increases, not as social cognition matures.
Inner speech (Vygotsky)
Vygotsky's term for the fully internalised, condensed form of private speech — thinking in words, without external vocalisation. Inner speech is the endpoint of a developmental process: external social speech → private speech → inner speech. For Vygotsky, inner speech is the primary medium of higher mental functioning.
Violation-of-expectation (VOE) paradigm
A behavioural method developed to probe infant cognition without requiring motor responses. Infants are habituated to a possible event, then shown either that same event or an impossible one (e.g. a toy car passing through a solid barrier). If infants look significantly longer at the impossible event, this is taken as evidence that they expected the possible outcome — and therefore possess the underlying knowledge. Used by Baillargeon to demonstrate object permanence far earlier than Piaget's sensorimotor account predicts.
Habituation and looking time
Habituation is the decrease in a response (such as looking) that occurs as a stimulus becomes familiar. In infant research, habituation–dishabituation procedures exploit looking time as a non-verbal index of knowledge and expectation. Infants look longer at novel or unexpected events; measuring how long they look allows researchers to infer what they know without requiring active motor responses.
Competence–performance distinction
The distinction between what a child actually knows (competence) and what they can demonstrate on a given task (performance). Baillargeon argued that Piaget's tasks systematically underestimated infant competence because they required motor responses that infants lack. The A-not-B error, for instance, reflects executive control immaturity — not the absence of object permanence. VOE methods separate competence from performance by using looking rather than reaching.
Core knowledge (Baillargeon)
The hypothesis that infants are born with — or develop very early — domain-specific systems of knowledge about the physical world (objects, agents, number, space). Baillargeon's research showing object permanence in young infants is foundational evidence: much of what Piaget attributed to construction through sensorimotor action appears to be available far earlier, suggesting initial knowledge systems rather than blank-slate construction.

How do Piaget and Vygotsky differ in their theories of cognitive development?+
The central disagreement concerns the mechanism and social role of development. For Piaget, development is driven by the child's individual interaction with the physical world — schemas are built and revised through assimilation and accommodation, and the child must be cognitively ready before instruction can be effective. For Vygotsky, development is fundamentally social: higher mental functions originate in interactions with more knowledgeable others, and instruction does not wait for readiness but leads development. A practical difference: Piaget's readiness principle implies teachers should not push children beyond their current stage; Vygotsky's ZPD implies that well-targeted instruction accelerates development. On language, their positions are sharply opposed — Piaget saw private speech as egocentric immaturity; Vygotsky saw it as a cognitive tool being internalised.
What is the violation-of-expectation paradigm, and what does it show?+
The violation-of-expectation (VOE) paradigm exploits a reliable property of infant looking: infants look longer at events that violate their expectations. The procedure has two steps. First, infants are habituated to a possible event until looking time declines. Then they are shown either the same event or a physically impossible version — for example, a screen that appears to rotate through a solid object. Significantly longer looking at the impossible event is taken as evidence that the infant expected the possible outcome, implying they possess knowledge of the underlying physical principle. Baillargeon and colleagues used VOE to show that infants as young as 3½ months responded to violations of object permanence — far earlier than Piaget's sensorimotor account predicts.
What did Baillargeon find about infant object permanence, and why does it matter?+
Baillargeon's landmark VOE study (Baillargeon, Spelke & Wasserman, 1985) showed that infants as young as 3½ months looked significantly longer at an "impossible" display in which a screen appeared to rotate through a solid object — an event that would only be impossible if the infant expected the object to still exist behind the screen. This contradicted Piaget's claim that object permanence is not achieved until 8–12 months in the sensorimotor stage. Baillargeon argued that Piaget's tasks confounded knowledge (competence) with motor skill (performance): infants understand object permanence far earlier, but the reaching tasks Piaget used require motor capacities they do not yet have. What is private speech, and why did Piaget and Vygotsky disagree about it?+
Private speech is the self-directed talk children produce when working on tasks — narrating their actions, talking through problems aloud. Piaget noticed it but interpreted it as egocentric speech: evidence that the child cannot yet take another's perspective and so speaks without addressing anyone. For Piaget, it was a symptom of cognitive immaturity that would disappear as social cognition developed. Vygotsky's interpretation was the opposite: private speech is a cognitive tool — internalised social speech being converted into inner thought. It should therefore peak when tasks are difficult and decline as competence increases. Berk (1986) found exactly this pattern, supporting Vygotsky: private speech is most common at intermediate task difficulty, not in the youngest or least socially aware children.
What are the main criticisms of Piaget's theory?+
Several lines of criticism have accumulated. First, Piaget systematically underestimated children — Donaldson (1978) showed that when tasks are embedded in meaningful social contexts rather than abstract laboratory settings, children succeed at earlier ages. Baillargeon's VOE research demonstrated object permanence far earlier than the sensorimotor account allows. Second, the stages may be less universal and less discrete than Piaget claimed — cross-cultural research found that some stages are absent or delayed in populations without formal schooling. Third, Piaget neglected the role of social interaction: the sociocultural tradition argues that much of what appears as individual cognitive construction is in fact scaffolded by others. Finally, the core mechanisms — assimilation, accommodation, equilibration — are descriptive rather than causal and have proved difficult to operationalise in ways that generate precise predictions.
What are common mistakes when writing about Piaget, Vygotsky, and Baillargeon?+
Four pitfalls appear repeatedly. First, confusing assimilation and accommodation: assimilation is fitting new experience into an existing schema; accommodation is changing the schema when it does not fit. Students often reverse them. Second, getting Vygotsky's instruction claim backwards: Vygotsky said instruction leads development — it should not wait for the child to be ready. Piaget said the opposite. Third, describing Baillargeon's VOE results without explaining the logic: writing "infants looked longer at the impossible event" without explaining why longer looking implies surprise (and therefore a violated expectation) will cost marks — the habituation baseline and the logic of dishabituation must be stated. Fourth, treating the three theories as wholly incompatible: a sophisticated answer acknowledges they are partly complementary, and that modern developmental science draws on all three.
