Understanding cognitive development in early adulthood
Early adulthood (roughly 18–40 years) is the period in which cognitive capacities reach their quantitative peak while simultaneously undergoing a qualitative transformation. The formal operational thinking that Piaget described as the endpoint of development — abstract, logical, hypothetical-deductive — turns out to be only one mode of mature cognition. The cognitive demands of adult life call for something more: reasoning that can tolerate contradiction, integrate multiple perspectives, and operate effectively under conditions of genuine uncertainty. Developmental theorists have called this postformal thought.

Raymond Cattell
1905–1998Proposed the distinction between fluid intelligence (Gf) and crystallised intelligence (Gc) in 1941, providing a framework that has shaped cognitive psychology and the study of ageing for eight decades. With John Horn, developed the extended Gf-Gc theory that forms the basis of the Cattell-Horn-Carroll model.
Gisela Labouvie-Vief
1939–2021Proposed postformal thought as a qualitative advance beyond Piaget's formal operations, characterised by dialectical, contextual, and relativistic reasoning. Her dual-process model distinguished logos (abstract, formal reasoning) from mythos (emotional, narrative, contextual knowing), arguing that mature adult cognition integrates both.
K. Anders Ericsson
1947–2020Developed the theory of deliberate practice as the primary driver of expert performance, challenging the view that expert performance is primarily a matter of innate talent. His research on chess masters, musicians, and athletes identified the structure and quantity of practice as the key variable distinguishing experts from advanced performers.

Fluid Intelligence
The capacity for novel problem-solving, pattern recognition, abstract reasoning, and working memory — cognitive abilities that do not depend on accumulated knowledge. Peaks in the mid-20s. Measured by tasks such as matrix reasoning, abstract analogies, and novel pattern completion. Tracks closely with processing speed and working memory capacity. Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) theory treats fluid intelligence (Gf) as a broad cognitive factor distinct from crystallised intelligence (Gc).
Crystallised Intelligence
The accumulated store of knowledge, vocabulary, verbal reasoning, and skills acquired through experience and education. Continues to increase through early and middle adulthood, peaks in the 60s or later, and is relatively preserved in late adulthood compared with fluid abilities. Measured by vocabulary tests, general information, and verbal analogies. Represents the cognitive harvest of a lifetime of learning.
Postformal Thought
A proposed stage of cognitive development beyond Piaget's formal operations, characterised by the ability to reason under conditions of genuine uncertainty, to integrate contradictory perspectives, and to understand that knowledge is contextual and constructed rather than absolute. Described by theorists including Gisela Labouvie-Vief and Jan Sinnott. Not universal — it develops in those whose adult lives demand relativistic, dialectical reasoning.
Processing Speed
The rate at which cognitive operations can be performed — measured by simple and choice reaction time, perceptual comparison speed, and digit-symbol substitution. Peaks in the early 20s and declines gradually but consistently thereafter. Because processing speed underpins many higher-order capacities (working memory, episodic encoding, executive function), its decline has cascading effects. Timothy Salthouse's processing speed theory argues that much of adult cognitive decline is mediated by slowing.
Deliberate Practice
K. Anders Ericsson's framework for expert skill acquisition: effortful, structured practice designed to address specific weaknesses, with immediate feedback, at the edge of current ability. Distinguished from naive practice (mere repetition) by its intentionality and discomfort. Ericsson argued that expert performance in virtually any domain is primarily a product of accumulated deliberate practice rather than innate talent — a claim that has been substantially debated and qualified by subsequent research.
Working Memory
The capacity to hold and manipulate information in mind over short periods while performing concurrent cognitive operations. Peaks in the mid-20s and is closely coupled with fluid intelligence and processing speed. Working memory underpins comprehension, reasoning, learning, and problem-solving. Its capacity in early adulthood enables the cognitive demands of higher education, professional training, and complex skill acquisition.
