Understanding cognitive development in early childhood
Early childhood (3–6 years) corresponds to Piaget's preoperational stage — a period in which symbolic thought is well-established but logical operations are not yet possible. The preoperational child can use language, images, and symbolic play with considerable sophistication, but their thinking is characterised by several systematic limitations that Piaget documented in elegant experiments: egocentrism, centration, irreversibility, and failures of conservation.

Jean Piaget
1896–1980Defined the preoperational stage and documented its characteristic limitations through elegant experimental tasks — conservation, three mountains, class inclusion — that remain central to developmental psychology curricula.
Margaret Donaldson
1926–2020Her book Children's Minds (1978) showed that Piaget systematically underestimated children by using tasks embedded in "disembedded" abstract contexts. Contextualised versions revealed competence at earlier ages, launching a major revision of the preoperational account.
Heinz Wimmer & Josef Perner
1983Developed the false belief task as a measure of theory of mind, finding that children under 4 typically fail. Their paradigm became the standard tool for studying theory of mind development across the following four decades.
Key concepts
Preoperational stage (Piaget)
Piaget's second cognitive stage, spanning approximately ages 2–7. Symbolic thought is present — language, pretend play, drawing — but logical operations are absent. Characteristic limitations include egocentrism, centration, irreversibility (inability to mentally reverse operations), and animism (attributing life to inanimate objects). The preoperational child cannot conserve quantity, number, mass, or volume.
Egocentrism (preoperational)
The inability to take another person's cognitive or spatial perspective — not self-centredness, but a cognitive limitation. Illustrated by Piaget's three mountains task: children assume another person sees what they see. Donaldson's contextualised replication (the "policeman" version) showed children succeed when the social context is meaningful, suggesting the limitation is partly task-specific.
Conservation failures
The preoperational child's inability to understand that quantity, number, mass, or volume remains constant despite changes in perceptual appearance. Classic task: two equal glasses of water, one poured into a taller thinner glass — the child judges the taller glass has more. Conservation of number is typically mastered around age 6–7; conservation of mass (5–7 years) and volume (9–11 years) follow.
Theory of Mind
The capacity to attribute mental states — beliefs, desires, intentions, emotions — to oneself and others, and to understand that mental states causally influence behaviour. A key indicator is passing the false belief task: understanding that another person can hold a belief that the child knows is false. Typically achieved around age 4; earlier in children with rich sibling environments and more advanced language.
False belief task
The canonical measure of theory of mind. In the Wimmer & Perner (1983) paradigm ("Maxi task"), a character places chocolate in one location, then leaves; the chocolate is moved; the child must predict where the character will look. In Baron-Cohen's Sally-Anne task, the child must say where Sally will look for a marble she believes is in her basket (it has been moved). Children under 4 typically fail, predicting the character will look where the object really is.
Private speech (Vygotsky)
The self-directed, audible speech children produce when working on tasks — narrating actions, talking through problems. Vygotsky saw this as social speech being internalised into thought. It peaks during the preschool years on difficult tasks and fades as competence develops. Berk (1986) confirmed it is most frequent at intermediate challenge, supporting the internalisation account over Piaget's egocentric speech interpretation.
Scaffolding and the ZPD in early childhood
Early childhood is the canonical context for Vygotskian scaffolding: the zone of proximal development is wide, the child is highly motivated by play and social interaction, and the effects of skilled support are large. Scaffolded jigsaw puzzles, shared book reading, and guided play are empirically supported contexts for cognitive development in this period.
