Ancient Roots
~350 BCEThe first systematic attempts to understand the mind came not from psychology but from philosophy and biology. Aristotle's De Anima established that psychological processes — sensation, memory, imagination, reason — are functions of living organisms, not properties of a separate immaterial soul. This naturalistic view would resurface two thousand years later as the foundation of modern neuroscience.
Aristotle's De Anima ("On the Soul") proposed that the psyche is not a separate substance trapped in the body but the form of a living organism - the set of capacities that make it alive. He described sensation, memory, imagination, and reason as functions of the soul, making him the first systematic thinker about psychological processes as biological functions.
Philosophical Roots
1637 – 1690Before psychology could become a science, the fundamental questions had to be posed: Is the mind separate from the body? How does experience shape who we are? Descartes and Locke defined the two positions — rationalism and empiricism — that would frame psychological debate for centuries. Their rivalry made unavoidable questions that psychology is still answering today.
In the Discourse on Method, Descartes proposed that mind and body are two entirely distinct substances - res cogitans (thinking thing) and res extensa (extended matter) - interacting via the pineal gland. This formulation of the mind-body problem set the philosophical agenda for three centuries of psychology and philosophy.
Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding argued that the mind is a blank slate at birth. All knowledge derives from sensory experience and reflection on it. This empiricist position established the philosophical ground for psychology's later focus on learning, environment, and how experience shapes the mind.
Birth of Science
1860 – 1890The late 19th century saw psychology break free from philosophy and establish itself as an experimental discipline. Fechner proved the mind could be measured; Wundt built the first laboratory and trained the first generation of experimental psychologists; James grounded mind in biology and function. Within a generation, psychology had its own journals, university departments, and a growing body of experimental findings.
Fechner's Elements of Psychophysics established the first mathematical relationship between physical stimuli and psychological sensation (Fechner's Law: S = k log I). By demonstrating that the mind could be measured quantitatively, Fechner made psychology a potential science - earning him the title "father of experimental psychology."
Wundt established the first formal laboratory of experimental psychology at Leipzig University - 1879 is the conventional founding date of psychology as an independent scientific discipline. His lab trained the first generation of experimental psychologists, who carried the discipline to the United States, Britain, and across Europe.
James's two-volume Principles of Psychology set the intellectual agenda for American psychology: emphasising the function rather than the structure of consciousness, coining the "stream of consciousness," and grounding psychological explanation in biology. His functionalist programme asked not "what is in the mind?" but "what does it do?"
The Great Schools
1895 – 1938The early 20th century was an era of competing grand theories, each claiming to explain all of psychology. Psychoanalysis, behaviourism, and Gestalt psychology were not just research programmes but rival world-views about the nature of mind. Their conflicts shaped clinical practice, educational theory, and philosophy of mind — and their legacies still define the main divisions in psychology today.
Studies on Hysteria (1895, with Josef Breuer) introduced the "talking cure" - the first clinical theory treating psychological symptoms as meaningful, not random. The Interpretation of Dreams (1900) laid out the unconscious, dream symbolism, and the id/ego/superego model. Psychoanalysis was the first comprehensive clinical theory of mind.

1953 – 1974By the 1950s, behaviourism's refusal to discuss mental states was increasingly at odds with what researchers were finding. Studies of amnesia, language, and memory all pointed to internal representations that could not be reduced to stimulus-response chains. The cognitive revolution — catalysed by computer science and linguistics — returned the mind to centre stage and established the information-processing framework that still dominates cognitive science today.
Henry Molaison (H.M.) underwent bilateral hippocampal removal to control his epilepsy. The result was profound anterograde amnesia - he could not form new declarative memories - with otherwise intact intelligence and skill learning. Milner's study of H.M. proved the hippocampus is essential for forming new declarative memories but not procedural skills.

1980 – 2002The final decades of the 20th century brought diagnostic standardisation, neuroimaging, and the merging of psychology with economics. The DSM-III made clinical research cumulative across centres worldwide; fMRI made the living brain visible to researchers; Kahneman and Tversky revealed systematic limits in human rationality that no prior theory had predicted. Psychology became genuinely multi-disciplinary — biological, computational, economic, and cultural at once.
The third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual abandoned psychoanalytic aetiology for descriptive, criteria-based diagnosis - specifying exactly what symptoms, duration, and impairment constitute each disorder. DSM-III transformed clinical psychology and psychiatry and enabled systematic epidemiological research worldwide.
The development of fMRI in the early 1990s transformed psychology into a brain science. For the first time, researchers could observe neural activity in healthy, awake humans performing cognitive tasks. The "Decade of the Brain" (1990-2000) catalysed cognitive neuroscience as a field bridging psychology and neuroscience.
