Jean Piaget (1896–1980) proposed the most comprehensive and influential account of childhood cognitive development in twentieth-century psychology. Working as a developmental epistemologist — concerned above all with how knowledge itself develops — he combined meticulous clinical observation with a constructivist theoretical framework, arguing that children are not passive recipients of information but active builders of understanding.

The core of Piaget's theory is a set of cognitive mechanisms: schemas (mental frameworks representing knowledge), assimilation (interpreting new experience through existing schemas), accommodation (modifying schemas to fit new information that does not assimilate), and equilibration (the self-regulating cycle of disequilibrium and accommodation that drives development forward). Piaget described four universal, invariant stages. The sensorimotor stage (0–2 years) is dominated by action-based knowledge; its signature achievement is object permanence — understanding that objects continue to exist when not perceived, fully established by 18–24 months. The A-not-B error, in which infants continue searching at a previously rewarded location even after watching an object move to a new one, marks an intermediate phase around 8–12 months. The preoperational stage (2–7 years) sees the emergence of language and symbolic thought, but reasoning is limited by egocentrism (demonstrated by the three-mountains task), centration, and irreversibility, which together produce characteristic failures on conservation and class-inclusion tasks. The concrete operational stage (7–11 years) marks the emergence of logical reasoning about concrete reality: conservation is mastered through decentration and reversibility; seriation and class inclusion become possible. Piaget's theory has generated an enormous critical literature. Margaret Donaldson (1978) showed that many Piagetian tasks underestimate children's competences: when tasks are framed in ways that "make human sense" to children, perspective-taking, conservation, and other abilities appear considerably earlier than Piaget reported. Baillargeon's violation-of-expectation research challenged the object permanence timeline, demonstrating evidence for it at 3.5 months. Stage ages are now understood as conservative; stage transitions are gradual and domain-specific rather than synchronous. Nevertheless, Piaget's fundamental insights — that children think differently from adults, that development is driven by the child's own constructive activity, and that it proceeds through qualitative reorganisations — remain foundational.
