In 1985, Renée Baillargeon published a finding that shook the foundations of Piagetian developmental psychology. Using a technique that measured looking time rather than reaching behaviour, she showed that infants as young as 3½ months appeared to expect objects to continue existing when hidden — months earlier than Piaget had claimed was possible.

Looking time as a window on knowledge

Infants look longer at events that violate their expectations than at expected events. The VOE paradigm uses this preference to probe implicit knowledge of physics without requiring any motor response.

Jean Piaget

1896–1980

Renée Baillargeon

1954–present

Her 1985 rotating-screen study is among the most cited in developmental psychology. She developed the core knowledge framework for physical reasoning and continues to produce influential work on the origins of causal, social, and moral cognition in infancy.

The violation-of-expectation paradigm

The VOE method relies on a basic feature of infant attention: infants look longer at novel or unexpected events than familiar or expected ones.

Habituation phase

Infants are repeatedly shown an event until their looking time decreases (habituation) — signalling that the event is no longer novel. In the original 1985 study, infants watched a screen rotate 180° on a flat surface — a familiar, physically possible motion.

Test phase: possible vs impossible events

After habituation, infants are shown two test events. In the possible event, a box is placed behind the screen — visible before the screen begins to rotate — and the screen stops before reaching the box. In the impossible event, the screen appears to rotate through the solid box (because the box has been secretly removed). If infants represent the hidden object, they should look longer at the impossible event.

The logic of surprise

Longer looking at the impossible event (dishabituation to violation) is interpreted as surprise — evidence that the infant expected the hidden object to block the screen. This inference assumes that looking time measures conceptual violation rather than perceptual novelty alone — an assumption that critics later challenged.

Subsequent paradigm variations

Baillargeon and colleagues developed many VOE variants testing infants' knowledge of solidity (objects cannot occupy the same space), support (unsupported objects fall), gravity, and number (small and large sets). Each variant follows the same logic: possible and impossible events that differ only in whether a hidden object is being treated as continuous and real.

What Baillargeon found

Object permanence at 3½ months

In the original 1985 rotating-screen study, 3½-month-old infants looked significantly longer at the impossible event (screen rotating through the box) than at the possible event — suggesting they represented the continued existence of the hidden box. This was months before Piaget's predicted onset of object permanence (8–12 months).

Knowledge of object solidity

Infants looked longer at events in which a solid object appeared to pass through another solid object, suggesting implicit representation of the principle that two solid objects cannot occupy the same space — a physical impossibility.

Knowledge of support

Using a platform and a box paradigm, infants appeared surprised when objects appeared to float unsupported — suggesting early knowledge that unsupported objects fall. Baillargeon found this knowledge emerging in the first months of life and becoming progressively more refined through the first year.

Earlier onset than Piaget claimed

Across a range of physical knowledge domains, VOE studies consistently found competence emerging 4–8 months earlier than Piaget's sensorimotor stage theory predicted. This formed the empirical basis for the core knowledge hypothesis: infants enter the world with, or rapidly acquire, foundational implicit physical knowledge independent of active motor exploration.

Challenges and limitations

Perceptual novelty vs. conceptual understanding

The most fundamental challenge: does longer looking at an impossible event reflect conceptual surprise at a violation of physical knowledge, or simply perceptual preference for a more novel or interesting stimulus? Critics (especially Schilling, 2000; Haith, 1998) argued that the infants may be responding to low-level perceptual differences between events — more motion, more contrast, more edges — rather than representing hidden objects.

The 'Piagetian search' discrepancy

If 3½-month-olds know objects are permanent, why do they fail to search for hidden objects until 8–12 months? Baillargeon's response: search requires coordinated motor action that very young infants cannot perform — the VOE paradigm bypasses this performance limitation. But critics noted the paradox: why would an infant who implicitly knows an object persists not be motivated to retrieve it?

Replication difficulties

Some specific VOE paradigms have proven difficult to replicate reliably. Looking time is sensitive to methodological details — the duration of habituation, the exact stimuli used, infant state on the day. Cohen and Cashon (2006) and others have shown that small procedural changes can eliminate or reverse the original looking-time difference.

Interpretation of nativism

Even granting that VOE results reveal genuine early competence, it does not follow that this competence is innate rather than acquired through the first weeks of experience. Baillargeon has distinguished between early-emerging, rapidly developing knowledge systems and strictly innate knowledge. The nativist interpretation remains contested.

Why it still matters

Transformed the study of infant cognition

The VOE paradigm and its successors (including eye-tracking and EEG methods) created a new empirical programme for studying what infants know without relying on motor action. It opened the field to questions about early social cognition, causal reasoning, and the origins of number concepts — all probed through variants of looking time.

The core knowledge framework

Baillargeon's findings, alongside work by Spelke, Carey, and Wynn, contributed to the core knowledge framework — the proposal that human infants are equipped from early in life with domain-specific systems for representing objects, agents, number, and geometry. This framework remains one of the dominant paradigms in developmental cognitive science.

Piagetian theory revised but not abandoned

VOE research did not destroy Piaget's framework but forced a rethinking of its timeline and mechanisms. Contemporary developmental cognitive science generally accepts an earlier onset of physical knowledge than Piaget proposed while acknowledging that explicit, flexible knowledge continues to develop through childhood — a hybrid constructivist-nativist position.

Understanding the typical trajectory of early physical and social knowledge has clinical applications in identifying early markers of autism spectrum conditions (where social agent knowledge may be disrupted) and certain genetic syndromes.
