Understanding harlow's monkeys and contact comfort

In the late 1950s, Harry Harlow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison began a series of experiments that would fundamentally alter our understanding of what infants need from their caregivers. The question he set out to answer was one that had been answered for decades by both behaviourists and Freudians: why do infants become attached to their mothers?

René Spitz

1887–1974

Psychiatrist who documented the effects of institutional deprivation in human infants in the 1940s ("anaclitic depression" and "hospitalism") — providing the human clinical parallel to Harlow's animal findings, showing that infants deprived of consistent social and physical contact in institutions showed severe developmental and emotional deterioration.

Harry Harlow

1905–1981

American psychologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who conducted the foundational surrogate mother and social isolation studies with rhesus macaques. His 1958 paper "The Nature of Love" is among the most cited in developmental psychology. Despite the ethical controversies surrounding his later isolation studies, his work on contact comfort and attachment is credited with transforming paediatric and institutional childcare practices.

John Bowlby

1907–1990

British psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who developed attachment theory — the theoretical framework within which Harlow's experimental findings make most sense. Bowlby's three-volume work Attachment and Loss (1969, 1973, 1980) remains the foundational text of attachment theory. Bowlby and Harlow corresponded and acknowledged each other's work; their complementary contributions — theoretical and empirical — together displaced the cupboard love theory from mainstream developmental psychology.

Mary Ainsworth

1913–1999

Developmental psychologist who operationalised Bowlby's attachment theory through the Strange Situation procedure — a standardised observational paradigm assessing the quality of infant-caregiver attachment. Her identification of secure, anxious-ambivalent, and avoidant attachment patterns extended Harlow's animal findings to human infants and created the empirical foundation for the study of attachment in developmental psychology.

Contact comfort

The tactile, physical sensation of clinging to a soft, warm surface — identified by Harlow as the primary determinant of infant attachment behaviour in rhesus macaques. Harlow's infants consistently chose the cloth mother over the wire mother regardless of which provided milk, demonstrating that the evolutionary function of attachment is not hunger reduction but proximity and physical contact with a protective figure. Contact comfort as a primary drive challenged decades of behaviourist and psychoanalytic theorising about the primacy of feeding in attachment formation.

Secure base

An attachment figure from whom an infant explores outward and to whom they return when threatened or uncertain, using the figure to regulate distress and restore security. Harlow's infant monkeys showed precisely this pattern with the cloth mother: they explored a novel environment from the cloth mother as a base, returned to her when frightened, and used contact with her to calm before venturing out again. Monkeys with only wire mothers showed no secure base behaviour. Bowlby developed this concept theoretically; Ainsworth later operationalised it in the Strange Situation procedure.

Critical period and early deprivation

Harlow's isolation studies revealed that early social experience is not merely helpful but necessary for normal social and emotional development. Monkeys raised in total social isolation for 6 months or more showed severe and apparently permanent deficits: they could not engage in normal social interaction, failed to mate, were unable to parent their offspring, and showed stereotyped self-harming behaviours (rocking, self-clasping). The severity of deficits depended on duration and completeness of isolation, suggesting a sensitive or critical period in early development during which social contact is essential.

The "cupboard love" theory and its refutation

The behaviourist account (drive-reduction theory) held that infants become attached to mothers because the mother, through feeding, reduces the hunger drive and becomes a conditioned reinforcer. The Freudian account similarly emphasised the oral stage and the breast as the primary source of both nourishment and libidinal attachment. Harlow's wire/cloth mother experiment was a direct, controlled refutation of both: when food and contact comfort were separated, infants consistently chose contact comfort — demonstrating that feeding is insufficient to establish primary attachment.

Bowlby's attachment theory

Developed in parallel with Harlow's empirical work, John Bowlby's attachment theory proposed that infant-caregiver attachment is a primary biological drive that evolved to maintain proximity to a protective adult — serving survival rather than hunger reduction. The theory drew on ethology (Lorenz's imprinting in geese), evolutionary biology, and clinical observation. Harlow's experiments provided the first controlled animal evidence for Bowlby's core claim that contact and proximity — not feeding — drive attachment, and the two scientists acknowledged each other's contributions as mutually reinforcing.

Motherless mothers

A troubling outcome of Harlow's deprivation studies: female monkeys raised without mothers or normal social contact consistently failed to parent their own offspring adequately. These "motherless mothers" typically ignored, neglected, or actively abused their infants — unlike normally reared mothers. The finding demonstrated that adequate early social experience is necessary not only for individual well-being but for the transmission of appropriate caregiving behaviour to the next generation — with implications for intergenerational cycles of deprivation in both animal and human populations.

Ethical concerns and animal welfare reform

Harlow's isolation experiments — particularly the "pit of despair" devices designed to induce depression-like states — caused deliberate, severe, and often lasting psychological harm to infant monkeys. These studies are among the most ethically contested in the history of animal research. They contributed substantially to reform of animal research ethics: the US Animal Welfare Act and institutional animal care guidelines were strengthened partly in response to public reaction to isolation research. No current institutional ethics board would sanction the total isolation procedures used in Harlow's 1960s studies.

What did Harlow's monkey experiments show?+

Harlow showed that infant rhesus macaques, given a choice between a wire surrogate that provided milk and a cloth surrogate that provided only soft contact, consistently spent approximately 17–18 hours per day with the cloth mother regardless of which provided food. They used the cloth mother as a secure base for exploration and as a refuge when frightened. This demonstrated that contact comfort — not feeding — is the primary basis of infant attachment behaviour, directly refuting the "cupboard love" theory held by both behaviourists and Freudians.

Why did Harlow use monkeys rather than human infants?+

Rhesus macaques are sufficiently similar to humans in their social and emotional systems to provide meaningful data, but the experimental conditions Harlow employed — total social isolation, controlled surrogate rearing — would never have been ethically or practically possible with human infants. The use of monkeys allowed Harlow to conduct controlled experiments that cleanly separated the variables of food provision and contact comfort, something impossible with human participants. The findings generalise to humans through the common evolutionary heritage of primate attachment systems and are supported by parallel human clinical observations (Spitz's hospitalism studies, later Romanian orphanage research).

Were Harlow's experiments ethical?+

Harlow's experiments — particularly the isolation studies and the "pit of despair" devices designed to induce depression — are among the most ethically condemned in the history of animal research. The infant monkeys in total isolation suffered severe, observable distress and lasting psychological damage. The work contributed directly to reforms in animal research ethics, including strengthened Animal Welfare Act provisions and institutional animal care standards. No modern ethics board would sanction the isolation procedures used in the 1960s studies. The scientific knowledge gained — which had significant positive effects on human childcare practices — is weighed against very serious animal suffering, and opinion among researchers and ethicists continues to differ on whether the trade-off was justified.

How did Harlow's findings change childcare and medical practice?+

Harlow's findings, combined with Bowlby's attachment theory and Spitz's clinical observations, contributed to substantial changes in paediatric and childcare practice from the 1960s onward. Hospital practices shifted toward encouraging immediate skin-to-skin mother-infant contact at birth (rather than separating infants into nurseries). Premature infant care increasingly incorporated "kangaroo care" — skin-to-skin holding — which has been shown in randomised trials to improve developmental outcomes. The earlier norm of advising against "spoiling" infants by picking them up when they cry was challenged by the evidence that physical contact and responsive caregiving are developmental necessities, not indulgences. Research on Eastern European orphanages in the 1990s further confirmed that social and tactile deprivation produces lasting cognitive and emotional impairment in humans.
