What is social cognition?

Social cognition refers to the mental processes involved in perceiving, interpreting, and responding to other people. It is what allows us to infer the beliefs, intentions, desires, and emotions of others — to navigate a social world populated by minds, not just bodies.

Giacomo Rizzolatti

1937–

Italian neuroscientist who led the team that discovered mirror neurons in macaque premotor cortex in the 1990s. His work opened a major line of inquiry into the neural basis of action understanding, imitation, and social cognition, and prompted extensive neuroimaging research on the human mirror neuron system.

Simon Baron-Cohen

1958–

British developmental psychologist who provided the first experimental evidence (with Leslie and Frith, 1985) that children with autism spectrum disorder fail the false-belief task — establishing theory-of-mind impairment as a core feature of autism. His subsequent work developed the "empathising-systemising" theory of autism and the "mind in the eyes" test for adult mentalising.

David Premack & Guy Woodruff

In 1978, Premack and Woodruff asked whether chimpanzees have a "theory of mind" — coining the term and sparking a field. Their paper prompted Wimmer and Perner to design the first false-belief task for children (1983), establishing the developmental benchmark for ToM research.

Theory of mind

The ability to attribute mental states — beliefs, desires, intentions, emotions — to oneself and to others, and to understand that others' mental states may differ from one's own. Assessed in children by false-belief tasks (e.g., the Sally-Anne task), in which children must track what a character believes despite knowing it is false. ToM is foundational to social communication, deception, cooperation, and empathy.

Mirror neurons

A class of neurons, first described in the macaque premotor cortex by Rizzolatti and colleagues in the 1990s, that fire both when an animal performs a goal-directed action and when it observes the same action performed by another. Human neuroimaging reveals activity in homologous regions (inferior frontal gyrus, inferior parietal lobule) during action observation. Mirror neurons are proposed as a neural substrate for action understanding, imitation, and affective empathy — though their precise role in human social cognition remains actively debated.

Empathy

The capacity to share and understand the emotional states of others. Cognitive empathy (perspective-taking) involves inferring what another person feels without necessarily sharing the emotion — it recruits the mentalising network. Affective empathy involves vicariously experiencing another's emotion and engages regions associated with the felt emotion itself (e.g., the anterior insula for pain empathy). The two forms are dissociable: some psychopathic individuals show intact cognitive empathy but impaired affective empathy.

Mentalising network

A set of brain regions that activate reliably when people reason about the mental states of others: the temporoparietal junction (TPJ), medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS), and temporal poles. The TPJ is thought to represent the mental states of specific others; the mPFC integrates self- and other-relevant information. This network is distinct from the mirror neuron network (involved in action simulation) and the empathy network (involved in affective sharing).

Social perception

The rapid, often automatic processes by which we read social signals from faces, bodies, voices, and behaviour. Includes face identity recognition (fusiform face area), emotion recognition from facial expressions, biological motion perception (pSTS), and the detection of social intent from movement. Social perception is remarkably fast: emotion can be read from a face in under 100 ms, and people form impressions of trustworthiness from faces in about 100 ms.
