Are emotions and feelings the same thing?

In everyday use the words are interchangeable, but psychologists often distinguish them. Emotions are typically described as automatic, short-lived bodily and behavioural responses — rapid physiological changes (heart rate, adrenaline, facial expression) triggered by a stimulus. Feelings are the subjective, conscious experience of those changes — what it is like to be afraid, or joyful. Antonio Damasio put it this way: emotions are the body's reaction; feelings are the mind's representation of that reaction. Lisa Feldman Barrett goes further, arguing both are actively constructed by the brain rather than passively detected.

Are emotions real?

Emotions are real — but what exactly they are is genuinely contested. The classical view (Paul Ekman, Carroll Izard) holds that a small set of basic emotions are biologically hardwired: discrete circuits produce fear, joy, anger, sadness, disgust, and surprise in a consistent, cross-culturally recognisable way. Lisa Feldman Barrett's theory of constructed emotion challenges this: emotions are not found but made — the brain combines interoceptive signals (bodily sensations) with learned conceptual categories shaped by culture and language. On her account, emotions are real, but as constructed mental events rather than fixed biological programmes.

What are the most basic human emotions?

Paul Ekman's research in the 1960s–70s proposed six basic emotions — happiness, sadness, fear, anger, disgust, and surprise — based on cross-cultural recognition of facial expressions. He later expanded the list to include contempt. Robert Plutchik proposed eight primary emotions arranged in his "wheel of emotions": joy, trust, fear, surprise, sadness, anticipation, anger, and disgust. More recent research by Cowen and Keltner (2017), mapping responses to thousands of video clips, identified 27 distinct emotional states — suggesting the basic-emotion framework may be an oversimplification.

What emotions are there?

There is no agreed list. At minimum, most accounts include fear, anger, sadness, happiness, disgust, and surprise as candidates for basic emotions. Beyond these, the landscape expands considerably: self-conscious emotions (shame, guilt, pride, embarrassment), social emotions (gratitude, contempt, jealousy, envy), and complex blended states (awe, nostalgia, schadenfreude). Robert Plutchik's wheel of emotions captures primary, secondary, and tertiary blends. Cowen and Keltner's 2017 study found 27 measurably distinct categories. The full space of human emotional experience likely defies any fixed list.

How do emotions affect the body?

Emotions trigger rapid physiological changes coordinated by the autonomic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Fear and anger activate the sympathetic branch: heart rate and blood pressure rise, breathing quickens, blood is redirected to the muscles, and stress hormones (adrenaline, cortisol) are released — the classic fight-or-flight response. Positive emotions activate the parasympathetic branch, slowing heart rate and supporting digestion and restoration. Chronic or repeated negative emotions — sustained stress, suppressed anger — are associated with cardiovascular disease, immune suppression, and accelerated cellular ageing.

Why are emotions important?

Emotions serve essential adaptive functions. They mobilise the body quickly for action (fear triggers escape, anger mobilises confrontation). They guide decision-making — Damasio's somatic marker hypothesis shows that people with prefrontal damage who lose the ability to feel emotions make catastrophically poor decisions, even with intact reasoning. Emotions signal what matters to us (sadness signals loss, joy signals progress toward a goal). They regulate social bonds — shared emotional responses build trust, enforce norms, and signal cooperativeness. And they shape memory: emotionally significant events are encoded more reliably, ensuring we learn from what matters.

Why do emotions matter?

Emotions are not obstacles to rational thought — they are part of it. Neuroscientist Antonio Damasio's research on patients with orbitofrontal cortex damage showed that the inability to feel emotions produces catastrophically poor decision-making, even when logical reasoning is intact. Emotions also determine wellbeing: positive emotion is a robust predictor of physical health, longevity, and social connection. Emotion regulation — the ability to modulate emotional responses — predicts success in work, relationships, and mental health. Understanding emotions is therefore central not just to psychology but to how we live.
