What is fear?
Fear is among the most studied of all emotions — in part because it is so tractable: it can be reliably induced, measured physiologically, conditioned, and extinguished in laboratory settings. It is also clinically central: excessive, persistent fear underlies the anxiety disorder spectrum, which represents the most prevalent category of mental health conditions worldwide.

Ivan Pavlov
1849–1936Russian physiologist whose classical conditioning paradigm provided the fundamental learning mechanism for fear acquisition. Although Pavlov studied conditioning in dogs, his framework — including the concepts of CS, US, CR, and extinction — remains the bedrock of fear conditioning research.
Martin Seligman
1942–presentPsychologist who proposed preparedness theory to explain why certain fears — particularly of evolutionarily relevant stimuli — are acquired so much more readily than others. His analysis of Garcia's conditioned taste aversion and Öhman's fear conditioning studies with snake and spider stimuli provided the empirical grounding.
Arne Öhman
1943–2020Swedish psychologist who developed the evolutionary threat-detection account of fear and anxiety. His laboratory studies showed that fear conditioned to evolutionarily relevant stimuli (snakes, spiders, angry faces) is more resistant to extinction than fear conditioned to modern stimuli (guns, mushrooms), supporting preparedness theory.
Joseph LeDoux
1949–presentNeuroscientist at NYU whose research established the amygdala as central to fear learning and memory. His two-route model — proposing a fast subcortical pathway from thalamus to amygdala — was enormously influential. His later work distinguished between defensive survival circuits and the subjective experience of fear, questioning popular neuroscience accounts.
Key concepts
Amygdala
An almond-shaped subcortical structure in the medial temporal lobe, comprising several nuclei. The basolateral complex (BLA) receives sensory input and learns threat associations; the central nucleus (CeA) coordinates defensive responses via projections to the hypothalamus, brainstem, and autonomic nervous system. The amygdala is necessary for the acquisition and expression of conditioned fear in animal models.
Two-route model (LeDoux)
Joseph LeDoux proposed two pathways for threat processing. The "low road" (thalamus → amygdala) is fast and unconscious — a coarse sensory representation triggers a rapid defensive response before full cortical processing. The "high road" (thalamus → cortex → amygdala) is slower but allows more nuanced evaluation. The low road explains why we flinch at a stick before realising it's not a snake.
Fear conditioning
A form of Pavlovian conditioning in which a neutral conditioned stimulus (CS, e.g. a tone) is paired with an aversive unconditioned stimulus (US, e.g. a shock), causing the CS alone to elicit a conditioned fear response (CR, e.g. freezing, increased heart rate). Fear conditioning in rodents requires the BLA; extinction reduces but does not erase the original association.
Extinction
The reduction of a conditioned fear response through repeated presentation of the CS without the US. Extinction is not erasure — it is new inhibitory learning that competes with the original fear association. This is why extinguished fears can return through spontaneous recovery, reinstatement, or renewal when the context changes — a finding with direct implications for exposure-based treatments.
Preparedness theory
Martin Seligman's 1971 proposal that humans are evolutionarily prepared to acquire fears of ancestrally relevant threats (snakes, spiders, social rejection, heights) but not of modern dangers. Prepared fears are acquired faster, are more resistant to extinction, and may develop without explicit conscious pairing — providing a biological account of common phobia patterns.
Freeze-flight-fight response
The sequence of defensive reactions to threat: initial freezing (reducing detection by the predator), flight (escape if possible), and fight (if escape is blocked). Controlled by the periaqueductal grey (PAG) in the brainstem, with amygdala input. Freezing also appears in anxiety — the behavioural inhibition system (Gray) suppresses ongoing activity in the face of signals of punishment or non-reward.
Fear generalisation
The spread of conditioned fear from the original CS to stimuli that resemble it — a gradient effect in which more similar stimuli elicit stronger responses. Excessive generalisation — where the person responds fearfully to stimuli bearing only superficial resemblance to the original threat — is a core feature of PTSD and phobia.
Subjective fear vs defensive behaviour
LeDoux's later work distinguishes between the amygdala's role in coordinating defensive behaviour (freezing, avoidance, physiological arousal) and the subjective feeling of being afraid. He argues the amygdala mediates the former, while subjective fear is a cortical construct. This challenges simple equation of amygdala activation with "feeling afraid."

Is fear an emotion?+

What is the difference between a phobia and fear?+
Fear is a normal, adaptive response to a real or probable threat — it is proportionate and subsides when the danger passes. A phobia is a persistent, intense, and disproportionate fear of a specific object or situation that poses little actual danger, and which leads to active avoidance. While fear ends when the threat is gone, phobic fear can be triggered by the mere thought of the feared object. Specific phobias (spiders, heights, injections) are among the most prevalent anxiety disorder diagnoses.
What is the role of the amygdala in fear?+
The amygdala — particularly its basolateral complex — is critical for acquiring and expressing conditioned fear responses. It receives convergent sensory input and learns to associate neutral stimuli with threat through Pavlovian conditioning. Its central nucleus coordinates defensive responses via the hypothalamus and brainstem. What is the difference between fear and anxiety?+
Fear is a response to an immediate, present, identifiable threat — it is time-locked to a specific stimulus and motivates escape or confrontation. Anxiety is a future-oriented state in response to anticipated or uncertain threat — it is more diffuse, longer-lasting, and motivates avoidance and vigilance. The same stimulus can trigger fear (when it is present) and anxiety (when it is anticipated). Most anxiety disorders involve excessive generalised threat responses rather than responses to specific present dangers.
What is extinction and why does it matter clinically?+
Extinction is the reduction of a conditioned fear response through repeated exposure to the conditioned stimulus without the feared outcome. It is the mechanism underlying exposure-based therapies for phobias and PTSD. Crucially, extinction does not erase the original fear memory — it creates new inhibitory learning that suppresses the fear response in the same context. This explains why exposure therapy can fail if conducted in a very different context from real-world triggers, and why relapse after treatment is possible.
