- Theory of Constructed Emotion (TCE)
- Lisa Feldman Barrett's account proposing that emotions are not universal, pre-wired biological categories triggered by specific stimuli, but are instead constructed in the moment by the brain using core affect and culturally acquired emotion concepts. Emotions are "population-level concepts" — they describe a family of related brain states that share a conceptual label, not a single underlying biological type.
- Core affect
- A continuous, two-dimensional representation of current mental state in terms of valence (pleasant-unpleasant) and arousal (activated-calm). Core affect is always present as a background property of consciousness; it is the raw material from which discrete emotion experiences are constructed. The circumplex model of affect (Russell, 1980) maps emotional experience in this two-dimensional space.
- Emotion concept
- A mentally represented category that a person uses to make sense of core affect and situational information. Emotion concepts are acquired through cultural learning — different cultures have different emotion concepts, and people without a concept for an emotion cannot experience it in the categorised, named form. Barrett uses the example of "schadenfreude": once you have the concept, you can experience the emotion; before you have it, the same underlying state would be experienced differently or not at all.
- Degeneracy
- The property of complex systems in which structurally different elements can perform the same function or produce the same output. In the context of emotion, degeneracy means that no single brain state produces a given emotion category, and the same brain state can be recruited for multiple different emotions. Barrett's meta-analyses of neuroimaging data show that no brain region responds selectively to a single emotion, which she takes as evidence against the classical view of discrete neural fingerprints.
- Predictive coding and interoception
- Barrett draws on Karl Friston's predictive coding framework: the brain does not passively process sensory input but continuously generates predictions and updates them with prediction error. Applied to emotion, the brain predicts the causes of interoceptive signals (heart rate, gut sensations, muscle tension) using past experience. The predicted cause — the "constructed" emotion — is what the person experiences. Regulation of interoceptive prediction error may underlie many forms of psychopathology.
