What is b.f. skinner?
Burrhus Frederic Skinner is the most influential behaviourist psychologist of the twentieth century — and arguably one of the most influential psychologists of any school. His work transformed the study of learning from relatively simple Pavlovian conditioning into a comprehensive science of voluntary behaviour; his methodology set standards for rigour in experimental psychology; and his ideas about behaviour modification and social design have shaped clinical practice, education, and public debate in ways that continue today.
01. Overview
Schedules of reinforcement — and their effects.
The pattern of reinforcement matters as much as the reinforcement itself. Skinner's systematic mapping of how different schedules shape the rate, pattern, and persistence of behaviour is one of behaviourism's most practically useful contributions.
Fixed Ratio Schedule
Reinforcement is delivered after every nth response — every 5 lever-presses, every 10 items assembled. Produces high, steady rates of responding with a characteristic post-reinforcement pause (a rest after each reward). Examples: piece-rate pay, a loyalty card that stamps every visit.
Variable Ratio Schedule
Reinforcement is delivered after an unpredictable number of responses — sometimes after 2, sometimes after 20. Produces the highest and most persistent rates of responding and the greatest resistance to extinction. Examples: slot machines, social media likes, fishing. The unpredictability of reward is what drives compulsive engagement.
Fixed Interval Schedule
Reinforcement is delivered for the first response after a fixed time period has elapsed. Produces a characteristic scalloping pattern: low responding after reinforcement, accelerating as the interval ends. Examples: weekly salary, a scheduled exam. Organisms learn when to respond, not how often.
Variable Interval Schedule
Reinforcement is delivered for the first response after an unpredictable time period. Produces slow, steady, moderate responding — the organism keeps checking because the reward could come at any time. Examples: checking email (a reply could arrive at any moment), monitoring a fishing line. More resistant to extinction than fixed interval.

Edward Thorndike
1874–1949American psychologist whose Law of Effect — derived from puzzle-box experiments with cats — established that behaviour is selected by its consequences. Thorndike's work was the direct precursor to Skinner's operant conditioning, and Skinner explicitly acknowledged the debt, though he replaced Thorndike's mentalistic language ('satisfying' and 'annoying' states) with purely environmental terms.
B.F. Skinner
1904–1990American psychologist, inventor of the operant chamber, and architect of radical behaviourism. Key concepts
Radical behaviourism
Skinner's philosophical position that all behaviour — including thinking, feeling, and verbal behaviour — can and should be explained in terms of environmental contingencies without reference to mental causes. Unlike methodological behaviourism (Watson's position, which simply excluded mental states from scientific study), radical behaviourism acknowledges that private events like thoughts and feelings exist — but treats them as behaviours caused by the environment, not as causes of other behaviours. Radical behaviourism was both a scientific programme and a philosophical stance on the nature of mind.
The operant chamber (Skinner box)
An apparatus designed to study the relationship between an organism's behaviour and its consequences under controlled conditions. The basic version contained a lever (or key for pigeons), a food dispenser, a light, and a speaker — allowing precise measurement and control of stimulus-response-consequence relationships. The chamber made it possible to study behaviour quantitatively over extended periods, producing the cumulative response records that revealed the characteristic patterns of different reinforcement schedules.
Verbal behaviour
Skinner's 1957 analysis of language as a category of operant behaviour — shaped by reinforcement like any other behaviour. He distinguished different types of verbal operants: mands (requests, controlled by states of deprivation), tacts (naming, controlled by the stimulus named), intraverbals (responses to other verbal stimuli), and echoics (imitation). Noam Chomsky's 1959 review of Verbal Behaviour became one of the most cited papers in linguistics, arguing that Skinner's account could not explain language acquisition — a critique widely credited with accelerating the cognitive revolution.
Behaviour modification
The systematic application of operant principles to change behaviour in applied settings. Techniques include reinforcement of target behaviours, extinction of unwanted behaviours, shaping, and chaining. Behaviour modification has been applied in clinical psychology, education (programmed instruction), management, sports coaching, and parenting — with a particularly strong evidence base in applied behaviour analysis for autism spectrum conditions.
Walden Two and the designed society
Skinner's 1948 utopian novel depicted a community governed by behaviourist principles — in which positive reinforcement replaced punishment, work was structured to maximise reinforcement, and child-rearing followed conditioning principles. The novel sparked intense debate about free will, social control, and the ethics of applying behavioural science to social design. Skinner saw it as a hopeful vision; critics read it as a chilling portrait of engineered conformity.
Beyond Freedom and Dignity (1971)
Skinner's most controversial book argued that the concepts of autonomous agency, free will, and personal moral responsibility are prescientific fictions that obscure the environmental determinants of behaviour. Acknowledging these determinants, he argued, is not dehumanising — it is the prerequisite for designing environments that reliably produce human flourishing rather than leaving behaviour to unplanned contingencies. The book was widely misread as a call for authoritarian control and was fiercely attacked by humanist psychologists, philosophers, and the general press.

What is the difference between Skinner's and Watson's behaviourism?+

Skinner focused on operant conditioning — the role of consequences in shaping voluntary behaviour — which Watson's framework could not adequately address. Why is variable ratio reinforcement so powerful?+
Variable ratio reinforcement — rewarding behaviour after an unpredictable number of responses — produces the highest rates of responding and the greatest resistance to extinction of any reinforcement schedule. The unpredictability is the key: because the organism never knows when the next reward is coming, there is no optimal time to stop responding. Every response could be the one that pays off. This is why slot machines, social media likes, and loot boxes in video games are so compulsive — they all operate on variable ratio schedules. By contrast, fixed ratio schedules (predictable number) produce post-reinforcement pauses; the organism rests after each reward because it knows the next reward requires a fresh series of responses.
