Chemical messengers released at synapses that transmit signals between neurons. Major systems: glutamate (primary excitatory CNS NT; AMPA, NMDA receptors), GABA (primary inhibitory CNS NT; GABA-A, GABA-B receptors), dopamine (reward, motor control), serotonin (mood, sleep), acetylcholine (neuromuscular junction, memory), noradrenaline (arousal, stress). Terminated by reuptake transporters (SERT, DAT, NET) and enzymatic degradation (AChE, MAO, COMT).
