Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory

Lev Vygotsky (1896–1934) proposed a fundamentally social account of cognitive development: higher mental functions do not arise from within the individual child interacting with the physical world, but from social interaction mediated by cultural tools — above all, language. Despite dying of tuberculosis at 37, Vygotsky produced a body of work of extraordinary richness and influence.
