What to focus on
For theory of mind (ToM), the false belief task is the critical evidence. Know the Sally-Anne task (Baron-Cohen, Leslie & Frith, 1985) in detail — the three participant groups, the results, and what the dissociation (autistic children fail despite typical cognitive ability) was meant to show. Understand the *logic* of the task: to pass, the child must represent Sally's belief independently of their own knowledge of where the marble is. This is what tests ToM, not just perspective-taking.
For Selman's stages, know the five levels and their approximate ages — but more importantly, understand what distinguishes each level (what the child can and cannot do). These are frequently tested alongside Piaget's perspective-taking work.
For mirror neurons, the key is to know the original discovery (Rizzolatti et al., 1996 in macaques), what the neurons do (fire both during action execution and action observation), what the simulation theory proposes (we understand others by running their actions through our own motor systems), and — critically — the limits and critiques of this claim. The "broken mirror" theory of autism is important to know but also important to critique.

Going deeper: apply, compare, and critique
Apply to examples: Use the false belief task logic to check understanding. If a question describes a scenario where someone has outdated information, what does ToM allow you to predict? Can a four-year-old make that prediction? Can an autistic child? Use Selman's stages to analyse social dilemmas — what level of perspective-taking is required to resolve a given interpersonal conflict?
Compare simulation theory vs theory-theory: Simulation theory (Gallese & Goldman, 1998) says we understand others by running their actions through our own motor system — direct, automatic, pre-conceptual. Theory-theory says we apply a body of knowledge about how minds work — more inferential and deliberate. Both are viable accounts; the debate is about which process is primary and whether mirror neurons support simulation specifically.
Critique: The false belief task has been challenged on executive function grounds — some researchers argue children fail because they can't inhibit the prepotent response (pointing to where the object actually is), not because they lack ToM. The "broken mirror" theory of autism is largely unsupported: neuroimaging findings are inconsistent, many autistic people have intact motor imitation, and mirror neurons code for motor goals not mental states. Heyes (2010) argues mirror neurons arise from associative learning, not as innate social-cognition circuits.
Why it still matters
Theory of mind is clinically central. Baron-Cohen's Eyes test and Autism Spectrum Quotient are used in autism assessment. Fonagy's mentalisation-based therapy for borderline personality disorder is built on the concept of reflective functioning — the capacity to understand one's own and others' mental states. Selman's perspective-taking work is applied in social-emotional learning curricula. Mirror neuron research has influenced rehabilitation approaches for stroke and motor learning. Understanding social cognition is also relevant to any situation where one person needs to accurately model another's beliefs — from medical communication to negotiation to child testimony in legal contexts.
Common exam pitfalls
Confusing first- and second-order false belief: first-order = "A thinks X is in location Y" (tested by Sally-Anne); second-order = "A thinks B thinks X is in location Y" (typically passed around age 6–7). The distinction matters for understanding autism — many autistic individuals who pass first-order fail second-order.
Overstating mirror neuron evidence in humans: mirror neurons were found by single-unit recording in macaques. Human evidence is indirect (fMRI, TMS, EEG) and the findings are more ambiguous. Don't present human mirror neurons as established fact.
Accepting the "broken mirror" theory uncritically: this hypothesis is exciting but largely unsupported. The key problems — inconsistent neuroimaging, intact motor imitation in many autistic people, mirror neurons code motor goals not mental states — should always accompany any mention of it.
Describing the Sally-Anne task without explaining its logic: saying "autistic children fail" without explaining *why* passing requires holding a false belief separately from one's own knowledge misses the theoretical point. The task is designed to isolate ToM from general intelligence — explain the logic.
