- Classical conditioning of fear
- In classical conditioning, a neutral stimulus (NS) that is repeatedly paired with an unconditioned stimulus (US) that naturally elicits a response (UR) eventually acquires the ability to elicit that response on its own — becoming a conditioned stimulus (CS) producing a conditioned response (CR). In Little Albert, the white rat (NS/CS) was paired with a loud noise (US), which naturally produced distress (UR). After ~7 pairings, the rat alone produced distress (CR). Watson argued this mechanism explains the acquisition of human phobias.
- Stimulus generalisation
- The spread of a conditioned response to stimuli that were not present during conditioning but share perceptual features with the original conditioned stimulus. Albert's conditioned fear of the white rat generalised to other white, furry, or soft objects — a rabbit, a dog, a fur coat, cotton wool, and even Watson wearing a white cotton Santa Claus mask. Watson used this generalisation to argue that apparently irrational fears of broad categories of objects (e.g., all things furry or white) need not have symbolic origins but can be explained as stimulus generalisation from a single conditioning event.
- Counter-conditioning and extinction
- Watson planned but failed to administer counter-conditioning: repeatedly presenting the conditioned stimulus (the rat) in a positive context (accompanied by pleasant stimuli such as food or play) until the fear response was extinguished and replaced by a positive or neutral response. Mary Cover Jones later demonstrated this technique successfully with "Peter" (1924). Counter-conditioning became the conceptual foundation of Wolpe's systematic desensitisation, in which a fear-producing stimulus is paired with relaxation, and of modern exposure therapy for phobias and PTSD.
- Watson's behaviourism and emotion
- Watson was the founding advocate of behaviourism as a complete psychology: the view that all human behaviour — including emotions — could be explained without reference to consciousness, mental states, or unconscious processes. The Little Albert experiment was his key empirical demonstration that emotions are environmentally shaped rather than innate or symbolically mediated. Watson famously claimed (in a 1924 lecture) that he could take any "healthy infant" and, given sufficient environmental control, make them into any kind of specialist — doctor, lawyer, thief — regardless of heredity. Little Albert was the most specific demonstration of this environmental determinism.
- Identity controversy and neurological concerns
- The identity of "Albert B." was not publicly known until researcher Hall P. Beck published evidence in 2009 identifying the infant as Douglas Merritte, son of Arvilla Merritte, a nurse at the hospital. Douglas Merritte died of hydrocephalus at age 6 in 1925. Subsequent investigation by Fridlund et al. (2012) argued that Douglas showed signs of neurological impairment in the original film footage — abnormal responsiveness and sluggish reactions — which Watson may have concealed to present Albert as a "healthy, normal" infant. If correct, this would mean Watson misrepresented his participant and that Albert's responses may not be representative of typical infant fear conditioning.
- Preparedness: limits of the equipotentiality assumption
- Watson assumed that any neutral stimulus could be conditioned as a fear stimulus with equal ease — the equipotentiality assumption. Martin Seligman's concept of "preparedness" (1971) challenged this: through evolution, humans are biologically predisposed to acquire fears of stimuli that posed ancestral dangers — snakes, spiders, heights, blood, strangers — more rapidly, with fewer trials, and more durably than fears of evolutionarily arbitrary stimuli. This explains why phobias cluster around specific content (snakes, heights, social situations) rather than being distributed randomly, and limits how far Watson's purely environmental account can take us.
- Ethical failures and legacy
- The Little Albert experiment is among the most ethically condemned in psychology's history: (1) Watson deliberately induced a lasting fear in a 9-month-old infant. (2) The fear was never removed — the child's mother withdrew him before counter-conditioning could occur. (3) Consent from the mother (an economically dependent hospital employee) may not have been truly voluntary. (4) Watson may have misrepresented the child's health status. The study's ethical failures serve as a founding teaching case in research ethics, and it would be entirely impermissible under modern institutional frameworks.
