- Concrete operational stage (Piaget)
- Piaget's third cognitive stage, spanning approximately ages 7–11. Logical operations can be applied to concrete objects and events: conservation, seriation, classification, and reversibility all emerge. Thinking remains tied to the concrete — abstract hypothetical reasoning is not yet possible. The stage corresponds closely with the onset of formal schooling, which Piaget thought reflected a genuine cognitive readiness.
- Conservation (mastered)
- By approximately age 7, children reliably conserve number and liquid quantity. Conservation of mass and weight follows (8–10 years); conservation of volume is the last to be mastered (~9–11 years). Piaget called this sequence horizontal décalage — the same logical structure applied progressively to different content. The child who conserves liquid but not volume is not inconsistent; the cognitive demands differ.
- Seriation and classification
- Seriation: the ability to arrange objects along a quantitative dimension (e.g. from shortest to longest) and to understand transitive inference (if A > B and B > C, then A > C). Classification: the ability to group objects by shared properties and understand hierarchical class relationships (daisies are a subset of flowers). Both develop reliably in the concrete operational period.
- Working memory expansion
- Working memory capacity — the number of items that can be held active in mind simultaneously — increases from roughly 2–3 units in early childhood to 4–5 by age 10, approaching adult capacity (~7 ± 2) by early adolescence. Driven by prefrontal cortex and posterior parietal maturation and by the development of chunking and rehearsal strategies that increase effective capacity.
- Memory strategies
- Children in middle childhood develop and increasingly deploy deliberate strategies to improve memory: rehearsal (repeating items), organisation (grouping by category), and elaboration (creating meaningful links). Younger children may know a strategy but fail to use it spontaneously — a "production deficiency." With age, strategy use becomes more spontaneous and flexible, and children choose strategies appropriate to the task.
- Metacognition
- Awareness and regulation of one's own cognitive processes — knowing what you know, knowing how memory works, knowing when you have understood. Develops substantially across middle childhood. Children become aware of memory limitations, difficulty levels, and strategy effectiveness. Metacognitive monitoring (checking comprehension) and metacognitive control (adjusting strategy based on monitoring) both improve markedly between ages 6 and 11.
- Processing speed
- The speed at which basic cognitive operations are executed. Increases approximately linearly from early childhood through mid-adolescence, roughly doubling between ages 5 and 11. Reflects ongoing myelination of cortico-cortical connections. Processing speed predicts working memory capacity, academic performance, and intelligence test scores, and is one of the most consistent individual differences in cognitive development.
