Facial Expressions of Emotion

What is the Facial Action Coding System (FACS)?

Facial expressions are one of the most studied signals in all of psychology. Are they universal windows into inner emotion states, or culturally shaped performances governed by social norms? Paul Ekman's decades of research proposed a universal biological core; Lisa Feldman Barrett and others have challenged this, arguing that recognition is more culturally variable than forced-choice studies suggest.

This quiz covers the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), micro-expressions, display rules, the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions, and the evidence base for and against universality.
